This is great. I actually found this page via google. Ive read a few different interpretations of the film but like you, I felt the real story was the polish girl. I think it’s interesting that no one ever mentions the title of the movie. Inland Empire is a geographical place but I think the title also represents the world she creates in her head. Her Inland Empire. But empires rise and fall and her fantasy world, I guess you could say, comes crashing down as realty intrudes. I also think Grace Zabriskie’s character is key. I interpreted her character as being there to warn her that she could not escape. That there must be accountability. I enjoyed reading this very much
Thank you so much, Tim! I'm very happy to know someone could enjoy this take on the film. I've never thought about the potential secondary significance of the title, but that certainly fits with what's going on in the movie!
Yes, empires rise and fall as reality intrudes. Well put!
You know it's funny, I don't think I've seen many of Lynch's stuff. I know I've seen "The Straight Story" and at some point I'm pretty sure I've seen Mullholland Drive.
Maybe. I have never been big on experimenting with narrative structures too much. Memento was interesting, but I found Donnie Darko pretty weird. I know they’re not Lynch movies but I think they’re kinda representative of the limits I have.

Never too late to check out the entire filmography. Wild at Heart being a notable exception, all are streaming via the Criterion Channel, I think.
